Schneider, Laura

Laura Schneider, M.A., is a member of the Graduate School Media and Communication (GMaC). In her dissertation project at the Department of Journalism and Communication Studies she focuses on the global measurement of media freedom and develops a new instrument for measuring media freedom around the world.

Laura Schneider works for the Department Research and Development of the Deutsche Welle Akademie and is a consultant for UNESCO. Both activities focus on media development cooperation and the situation of global media freedom.

Laura Schneider (born in 1984) studied Media and Communication Science and Latin-American Studies (B.A.) as well as Journalism and Communication Science at the Universities of Hamburg, Guadalajara (Mexico) and Sydney. She wrote her master thesis, which was published as a book in 2011, about “Journalism and Press Freedom in Mexico”.

Since 2011 she is a PhD-candidate at the Graduate School Media and Communication and received a scholarship from the Rudolf-Augstein-Foundation. In her dissertation project she focuses on the global measurement of media freedom and develops a new instrument for measuring media freedom around the world.

Her research interests lie in the areas of international media and press freedom research, media and development, media and democratization, international journalism research (focus on Latin America) as well as international and transnational communication.
