Idea

Digital games have not only become a highly dynamic sector of today’s entertainment industry, but have also started to garner the public’s attention as relevant ‘cultural artifacts.’ However, gaming has always been a natural part of everyday culture both among adolescents and adults. Here, games are embedded in a wide range of cultural practices, which go beyond the notion of a unified and homogeneous ‘gaming culture.’ The lecture series will shed a light on these different “Subcultures of Play” from a range of academic disciplines, e.g. the social sciences, humanities, law, education, and game design. The focus will be specifically on those practices of production, appropriation and reinterpretation, which are in some way underrepresented, creative, subversive or just ‘different.’ The lectures by distinguished scholars and industry experts will be complemented by moderated discussions and workshops.
